New: VISSIM Driving Simulator Interface
Driving simulators are used in experiments to understand drivers' behavior in various situations and under different conditions. Study objectives may be the assessment of different highway design standards, the impact of new driver assistant and driver information systems and the monitoring of the driving behavior under the effect of psychoactive substances like alcohol.
For many investigations it is essential that the vehicles that surround the actual driver behave realistically. That means that they should interact with the driver, with each other and with the infrastructure according to a realistic model.
The driving simulator Interface allows VISSIM to be connected with a driving simulator in order to provide the most realistic behavior of the vehicles that surround the driver. With this interface, VISSIM's ability for simulating multi-modal traffic flows and it's flexibility to model any type of geometric configuration or unique behavior encountered within a transportation system can be utilized for driving simulator experiments.
The driving simulator communicates with VISSIM through a dynamic link library function call construct that runs as a separate process to update vehicle positions and signal states. Data are exchanged via shared memory to achieve a high performance (real time operation).
