Method for a macro-economic evaluation of long-term strategies in municipal traffic planning
Due to decreasing funds that local authorities need for their manifold tasks, one of the main challenges of future traffic planning will be to develop strategies to reduce the expenditure on traffic and transport without significantly decreasing the quality of life and transport in urban areas..
These strategies must – according to a sustainable urban development – consider non-motorised traffic and its strengthening as well as the interaction between traffic and settlement development. Additionally, methods for the recording of the corresponding short-term, medium-term and long-term expenditures have to be improved.
As part of the research project, PTV developed a method for the evaluation of long-term traffic planning strategies, considering the aspects mentioned above. Since the method forecasts the effects of possible actions within the planning process at an early stage, and thus makes them transparent, it contributes to the decision-making process regarding the basic concept of municipal traffic planning.
