IAA News: The future belongs to intelligent freight transport
PTV, the European Commission, DHL and MAN present innovative transport concepts at IAA Commercial Vehicles on September 27
Karlsruhe, Germany, August 20, 2010. What will tomorrow's transport systems be like? What will be the impact of the continuous development of information and communication technologies on future logistics? A study conducted by PTV on behalf of the European Commission will provide the answers. The latest results will be presented to the general public for the first time at IAA Commercial Vehicles on September 27. Experts from politics, research (European Commission) and business (DHL and MAN) will provide up-to-date information on intelligent freight systems.
The study shows that there is a great potential for the comprehensive use of intelligently planned, controlled and monitored transport units in logistics. During IAA, visitors can look forward to scenarios for future logistics presented by numerous experts: from the development of networked transport systems to intelligent planning and control of freight transport. This also includes integrated information processing and autonomous decision-making which manage and control transports. Moreover, visitors will get an overview of tomorrow's technology that will have a major impact on transport optimisation and its further development.
During the two-hour event, that is scheduled to begin at 2.00 pm, Marcel Huschebeck, Research & Innovation Logistics, PTV AG, will present excerpts from the current study. Afterwards, Wolfgang Höfs, European Commission, ICT for traffic and transportation, will outline the European perspectives regarding intelligent freight transport. Users from DHL and MAN will then provide an outlook on the final implementation of transport management with intelligent trucks and on future developments for road haulage. A final panel discussion with all speakers will complete the event.
The study focuses on scenarios for future transport management. It is based on interviews with transport experts and aims at developing both a realistic scenario, that is regarded as feasible by the experts, and a visionary scenario. The latter describes an autonomous transport business which is based on decentralised decision-making processes only, which, for example, includes paperless planning on the level of the transport unit (e.g. trucks or pallets).
