Traffic

A current trend in the transport sector is e-ticketing: More and more transport associations are now implementing this advanced e-business system as its convenient mode of payment attracts new customers. At the same time, transport associations can use detailed information on the choice of public transport lines and routes for customer-focused transportation planning - as is shown by the example of Schwäbisch Hall.

Over the past 27 years, PTV NuStats has established itself as the preeminent U.S. survey science consultancy specializing in complex quantitative research. PTV NuStats conducts approximately 50 to 70 research projects annually, most of which focus on transportation issues, travel behavior, and public transit. While their authority in the transportation survey market remains unparalleled, PTV NuStats has catapulted to a broader and more diverse level of consulting, as demonstrated by two notable recent project wins:

The California Household Travel Survey, the single largest regional household travel survey effort ever undertaken in the U.S., and the National Cooperative Highway Research Program that aims at improving travel behaviour
forecasting models.

Visions of caravans filled with spices, perfumes and fine fabrics are conjured up by any mention of the Silk Road, a term coined in 1877 by Ferdinand von Richthofen, a German geographer. For centuries, this overland corridor seemed to have been swallowed up by the desert sand. Now, a vast EU project aims to revive the route, encourage trade between East and West, and promote the development of regional infrastructure. PTV's experts are helping by developing a freight transport model on a truly grand scale.

Hong Kong International Airport is one of the largest airports worldwide – and it will become even bigger. PTV’s micro-simulation software VISSIM allows airport planners to simulate all stages of passenger and vehicle movement within the airport boundary. In a pioneering project PTV Asia-Pacific, in partnership with the Hong Kong Airport Authority, has developed a micro-simulation model of the apron road network, taxiways, runways and gate operations

How to handle large amounts of count data? Traffic planners and engineers often come up against limiting factors, such as the collection of useless data. Therefore, it is important to conduct traffic surveys. IT-based analysis and archive options help the planners to efficiently handle these huge amounts of data.

PAYD will give motorists greater control, choice and flexibility over their car insurance premium. Customers who drive less will pay less. And drivers, who avoid peak hours and dangerous roads, can save even more. Find out more about PAYD, that links auto insurance policies to mileage, and the technology behind this new concept.

Logistics

Vincent Kobensen, member of the Board of Directors of PTV AG, explains in an interview how green logistics can open up new opportunities for both business and society.

Price isn't everything in the logistics industry. Climate protection has become a rallying cry for all companies - not just the large multinational ones. But it isn't enough to claim that you embrace eco-friendly logistics; you have to be able to prove it. Find out how map&guide professional creates competitive advantages with its "carbon offsetting" feature for green logistics.

Climate protection has become an important issue in the logistics sector. However, a company that  aims at greening its fleet also needs to prove that it acts in a responsible and eco-friendly manner. map&guide professional 2009 is the first route planning software that reliably calculates carbon emissions on the basis of routes. Additionally, it allows logistics providers to offer carbon-neutral transports - important steps in the right direction.

Urban freight transport has a direct bearing on the efficiency of the economy: it contributes to the competitiveness of industry in the region concerned and is a major employer in its own right. The future success of town and city centres, which face increasingly severe competition, notably from out-of-town retail parks, depends on how effectively they can cope with problems of congestion, pollution and noise. It is therefore important to take account of commercial interests and the environmental lobby as far as urban logistics is concerned. The BESTUFS Good Practice Guide, which was published in August 2007, is a useful tool.

Innovative solutions mark the shift towards intermodal transport. The first international workshop of the EU-funded PROMIT project (Promoting Innovative Intermodal Freight Transport), which took place in Basle in November 2006, focussed on "Intermodal door-to-door services". Find out more about sustainable and innovative intermodal transport concepts and technologies!

Excellent prospects for telematics, however many logistics companies have not yet tapped its full potential. Why is this?, and how could the companies use the potential of telematics better in future? The answers to these questions are in this report.
